#bigboywheelclique: Finn Zygowski's bb17 serpent

(via GWN)
one of the really big supporters of the 29er essays has to be the homie finn of great white north. we share a great deal of opinions and views on big boy wheels andthe dude makes me glad i'm not crazy and talking to the endless abyss that is the internets. he put up a bike check on great white north- i love bb17 serpents and i will post every single one that comes into my attention because i love them so much. you'd swear i'm on bb17's payroll, but alas, i'm just a stupid huge fan of this frame. dude's build is super proper too. i love me some balloon-y rubber on some polished h plus son toasterstrudels todestreibs. check it all out and soak it all in here.

you'll be seeing more of him on this blog when i get to the interview parts of the 29er project.

on the ups: derek salvador for onetruesoul

Derek for OneTrueSoul from Derek Salvador on Vimeo.
derek is really on the ups in the northern california fixed freestyle scene. he took first at imd's 3 year anniversary beginner comp which looks like it earned him a nemesis project. i was wondering why he was selling that primo 2013 pfix of his. anyway, here he is doing a short one for onetruesoul at 3rd and army.

by the way, derek is the head of the EPIC indoor fixed gear comp that's potenitally going down in january in rocklin, CA. i will try to be a part of it, and i will keep you all posted!

tina turner: all city thunderdome track frame

(via all city)
all city has never been one to get all flashy apart from what they name their stuff- they like clean, no frills  bikes with silly names. case in point: their upcoming thunderdome track (for you young'ns out there, it's a mad max reference). yup. two men enter, one man leaves. the thunderdome makes up for what the big block lacks in terms of track-ability. they used aluminum over steel and tweaked it to utilize a shorter a to c fork. all in all, it's going to be one of those great rides. check it out.

fixie riding: wolfdrawn's KVLT KLIPS XIV

damn dude, this is the 14th installent? i mean i know it's been a minute since we've seen a KVLT KLIPS edit, but damn- that's a lot of installments. can i just say that this song is amazing? because it is. it's going to be my ring tone, i swear to you. there's not a dull moment in it. so drop everything you're doing and watch it.

super limted: CSK beanie

(via csk)
jacob ruff's collared shirt krew is one of the best things to come around for FGFS in a minute. i'm in love with my socks so much that i got another pair. it's just so gangsta. jruff got these beanies made so you can look steezy with your matching socks.

but he only made 8. SO BUY ONE NOW BEFORE IT'S GONE.

clary-ty: jason clary and the chain gangsta boombot by boombotix

(via bbtx)
boombotix sent me a link to a post involving jason clary and the introduction of the chain gangsta boombot. jason basically inspired the design of this one which is limited to 800 pieces. you can see how he came to be a part of boombotix here. i have a really OG one (when boombotix went by a different name) and i love using it- people get into riding when there's some tunage going on.

get a boombot at imd, ridesfo, areacycles, mission bicycle co, or here at boombotix.com

rules are simple, prize is epic. get to it.

coming soon: 5th annual SF bike expo for 2012

im not sure what the hell happened but this thing didn't make it up here. that surprised me because i'm a part of this whole event (i know, what the hell man). going down on november 10th and 11th at the cow palace, SF bike expo will be celebrating their 5th show. this is going to be my third year going to this event and it's funny since i'm finding myself getting more and more involved with it every time it comes around. yes, there will be an FGFS comp (am and pro, i'll be posting about this tomorrow) and yes i will be there. there will also be a bike polo tourney as well as some gnarly dirt jump action.

let us know if you're coming through on our facebook event page.

sinister looking: phil wood cranks in black

(via pedal consumption)
i love these damn cranks. san jose's phil wood knows how to make a beautiful and functional product and now they did their track cranks up in all black with that signature red phil logo. there's something about black and red that makes something look mean. but of course, we already know this is a mean crankset due to the fact that they retail for OVER 600 US DOLLARS.

i can never justify riding these, let alone buying these but man they're purdy.

the death and dying of the 700c/29er in FGFS ptIV: the endangered species

now that we got a good chunk of discussion away i'm going to go into a really big issue (well at least for me and a bunch of people in the 29"/700c community)- the lack of manufacturers catering to the big boy wheel. i'm mature enough to admit that there really is close to no demand for these frames anymore but that doesn't mean they should be fazed out of existence. here i think you'll realize how little this segment of FGFS has become.

FOAD-losophy: sam sings pt.4

Sam Sings Pt. 4 from FOAD on Vimeo.
this series is one of those things where you know that there's really nothing for you there, but you'll still watch it. here's a good warning for you: it will raise more questions than answers. seriously, every clip has a question unanswered. is this thing a whole exercise in modern philosophy where FOAD actually knows what they're doing? maybe. but maybe it's just my homies doing awesome things while a camera is running.

so many questions.

from paris, with love or something: simon gomok's streetpanam

Streetpanam from Simon Gomok on Vimeo.
our traffic distribution homies from across the atlantic sent this one over. simon gomok was one of the dudes who came from afar to participate in the redbull event. he's also one of those guys who can just power through stuff but can still keep it subdued to the point where everything doesn't look clunky and heavy. when he does 180 skids, dude just glides... but then in his lines, he'll go off and do a 540 cab like it's not a big deal. these are serious lines too. definitely a good watch people.

sexy parts: 14bikeco's 14R dropout by royce

(via FGL)
the 14 bike co 14R is one of those holy grail frames for me. i mean, it's an aero/lightweight STEEL frame- those two traits don't go together, but it's executed right here. one of the great touches on this frame is these royce dropouts. if you don't know about royce (well not a lot of people do know royce), the analogy i'd use is.... they're like paul or phil wood but british. to coincide with the 14R utilizing royce dropouts, they made some really nice track parts:

HOLY CRAP THOSE ARE SOME BURLY CRANKS. i needs to get me one of those....

need this: machete DEAF hub now out

(via machete)
the machete dudes have been working hard on this one for a while and now we have the end result. the DEAF hub is composed of 6061aluminum shell, comes in 36H, and has a hollow 4130 axle. it comes in 9t or 10t, and it comes in 4 different colors: black, gunmetal, burnt orange, and (my favorite) rosy pink. really want that rosy pink....

and it turned sour: louis vuitton bike polo

the last time we saw anything from this project was a year ago. i liked the pieces alot especially the insane chainwheel and leather accents, but this kinda ruined it for me. i mean, cut the crap- bike polo isn't noir-esque nor is is played in suits. it's a bloody, ravenous sport that is probably the farthest thing away from fashion. what the hell man. they made something mildly cool, ridiculously lame.

the local: the north race interviews lizzie armitstead

(via TNR)
the north race is one of my favorite new blogs to come out this year and they're really pushing some great articles- you should really follow them. recently, megan from TNR interviewed the amazing lizzie armitstead of the 2012 great britain olympic team. she famously duked it out with the train that is marianne vos but ultimately ended up in second in front of the home crowd (marianne vos is fast, people and that's a respectable podium). a lot of people don't know this, but she's steeped in track tradition and it's cool to see great britain have a habit of track riders killing road races (sir bradley wiggins, the badass he is). here's a little excerpt:

"You had some pretty horrible weather in the final leg of the road race. Do you think training around Yorkshire’s roads was good preparation for this? What are your favourite places to ride around the region?
Harsh conditions suit me and I’m sure it is because I grew up in Yorkshire. The heat is very detrimental to my performance. My favourite rides are up the Wharfe valley from my home town Otley.
"

be sure to swing by the north race to get the full interview.

a state: the tour of johor by duraath

TOUR OF JOHOR: DAY 1 from duraath on Vimeo.

TOUR OF JOHOR: DAY 2 from duraath on Vimeo.

TOUR OF JOHOR: DAY 3 from duraath on Vimeo.
for those of y'all who don't know, malaysia is a bunch of states. jorhor happens to be the second largest state behind pehang but you don't want a geography lesson, i know. these dudes rode the length of it in some pretty brital conditions as far as touring is concerned. here's what duraath had to say:

"A year ago today – 25th October 2011 – I had the chance to follow my cycling team Wightset! for a tour around the second largest state in Malaysia – Johor. At first i had the urge to cycle tour with them but then no one would be documenting this remarkable event. So i packed my glidecam, lenses, tripod and opteka grip, get in my friend’s car and tour alongside the guys for the whole 3 days straight. It was a momentous experience for me and the rest of the team as no one has ever done this kind of tour around Johor with a track bike before."

even though this was a year ago, the footy just came out recently and it's still a really impressive feat.

now excuse me, i'm gonna go try and do some tire slides.

players club: leader 725 mid LTD for citygrounds

(via citygrounds)
i really dig what leader is doing to keep it fresh- you may remember them dropping  ferrari red and autobahn silver 725's exclusively for japan. well now the US is getting some love with blood orange and silver- both colors exclusively for citygrounds. i'm sure i'm not the only one when i say THESE ARE HELLA WET. the 725 mid shows that there's alot of value and sportiness to leader, and in these two colors- a drop of WETNESS. that blood orange is SHMEXY. get one now, because when they're gone, they're gone.

all point bulletin: SUPPORT CHUEY BRAND

(via mash sf)
mash sf put out this message for everyone and i need to share it because i've been a supporter of chuey brand ever since i've heard of them (i have 2 or three hats made by them somewhere in the BHSK HQ).

"We are receiving late news that our friend Kachusha Munkanita is in need of legal support. He is one of the most peaceful people we have met, so when a story was published about his arrest, the bike community took notice. In short, he was arrested for watching 3 young people being arrested in the Mission, and wanting advocate for their saftey.

The least we can do is help gather resources for when he needs them. We are offering our Histogram Cap, with 100% of the profit (about $7 each) going to help support legal fees Chuey will incur.

Help support this local hero in the simplest form, and Get a cap. Once an additional fund raising event has been organized, we will post it here.

We will update you once we know more.

the death and dying of the 700c/29er in FGFS pt.III: the bottom bracket conundrum

this one's a strange one that i've been thinking about alot. for the most part, the 26" manufacturers have done away with bottom bracket drop which (let's be honest) doesn't really have that much of function with FGFS to begin with. yet it's taken a longer time for 29"/700c to get a hold of this concept. it's a pretty unique issue for 700c/29. i'm going to try to explain why the strange phenomena still exists, and why there's a bit of internal war within the 700c/29er sector.

48 year hiatus: aino miho and women's keirin

(via tokyofixed)
tokyo fixed shared this on their blog and i thought i should post it up too since it's the golden age of japanese keirin nowadays. aino miho, one of the few professional women's keirin riders shared the link to her tumblr site (ainomiho.tumblr.com) with the tokyo fixed guys- if you didn't know (well a lot of people dont know this) professional women's keirin in japan has essentially been nonexistent for 48 years. you would think a country with such a rich history of keirin wouldn't be so uptight about it. this past july was the first event for women's keirin and apparently it brought in record crowds. i personally think it's not because men are pigs and want to see ladies duke it out, i think it's great because the bikes aren't SUPER NJS'd out. i mean NJS bikes are great, but these bikes are alot more intense (bridgestone anchors FTW). it's a pretty interesting topic and you should keep up with aino as she goes through her professional career in keirin.

jah-mey-kyah: donhou cycles' reynolds 931 track

having framebuilder friends, you pick up on quite alot of nerdy frame builder knowledge. when i saw this was made of 931 i quickly though "931.... that's stainless." indeed, this is a track bike that is composed of fillet brazed stainless- stainless is alot more temperamental to work with than 4130, so you can only imagine how impressed i am at this bike. plus it's got the sweet rasta fade.

this is straight fire. first off, i want to commend kris on doing a really good job so far on the 3:30 series. this stuff is hard to do and i can appreciate that. next i want to say boothby is on top of his game- dude has so much control over his bike, it's unreal. that wheelie hangover could've easily turned into a half assed smith, but boothby's so on top of it that he pull it out and does a happy dance. shoo, i would too if i was bossin' with those oakley factory pilots.

the death and dying of the 700c/29er in FGFS pt II: the wheel sizes

the first installment was pretty much a base layer to build upon. the history of FGFS is a short one, to be quite honest, and that's not really the stuff that will get people talking. this is one post that's going to cause a ruckus. here, i'm going to try to weed out the pros and cons of both wheel sizes.

Torey Thornton BB17 2012 Bone Drone from breakbrake17 on Vimeo.
for a while this was a john prolly exclusive and i didnt realize it was let loose until yesterday so now i have a chance to share my thoughts. in the light of my whole BHSK 29er saga project, torey thornton came out with this. honestly i think that's what really kicked me in the pants to start up the whole project- i mean this thing is WILD. torey is everything anti-conformist in FGFS. he has no pegs, he's running the right size wheels, he's not doing barspins or anything like that- he just finds stuff to ride that seems impossible to roll over, and rides it. simple concept, but difficult in execution. dude defies all physics with those tire slides... definitely something you should watch.

not gonna lie, this song is my shit. future is a HORRIBLE rapper, but this song slaps. gabe got picked up by unknown and it really looks like a good fit for the dude. gabe's got that tech feel down to the point where you can't hate on his normal barspins everywhere- everytime he throws a bar, it's stomped out without looking mad clunky. that "bar-bar" thing at the end is worth every second of this edit.

the death and dying of the 700c/29er in FGFS pt I: FGFS, a quick and dirty general history of the crap we ride.

this is a post i wanted to do months ago but up until now I havent really gotten all my thoughts down. it's 2012 and the dominating wheel size in FGFS is undeniably 26". it's unbelievable how fast this area in cycling has progressed seeing that a year ago riders would seriously think about 29"/700c as an option. if you look back 2011's redbull ride n style there were a handful of people on 29"/700c setups. this year's event had only one or two dudes on big wheels. here i'm going to try to explain what went wrong the rise and fall of the big boy wheel.

get more after the jump.

Saturday Night Throwaway from Daniel Le on Vimeo.
daniel le is a kid in my neighborhood that documents the FGFS scene in san jose pretty damn well. dude also rides with a mob like everyday. it's for that reason why i'm giving a little focus to the dude and the crew- they just stack clips like pringles chips and throw them up all the time. danny dropped his solo edit along with some random throwaway clips- look out for peter chen's feeble on a thin ledge as well as some call me maybe action in suburbia. if you want to get a good cohort of what's happening on the local level here in SJ, look at what danny drops.

looks like everyone's favorite TTv correspondent, gus molina, done found himself a tube. he got together with dave beard of rec fail to get some really epic snaps of how this whole thing went down. i love full pipes because it's the stuff of videogames, you know? it's like THPS status.... check out the whole set here.

the far far away team: tokyo fixed bib

(via tokyo fixed)
see what i did there? i just covered 3 great bike shops with some really cool functional clothing drops. here we have tokyo fixed's bibs that compliment their previous jersey drops. first off, they have one of the best logos in fixed gear. then there's the ass message. that's the best advertising real estate for awkward stares at stop lights. scoop one up here!

the away team: city grounds arm and leg warmers

(via citygrounds)
let's face it, it's still hella hot outside for california. but soon enough it's going to get cold, and your arms and legs are going to be crying for some warmth- that's where our other friendly store citygrounds comes in. to compliment their endo customs kit, they came out with knee and leg warmers. don't be left out in the cold and get them now.

the home team: iminusd champion kit

(via iminusd)
i used to be reluctant to spandex, but after the first time having it on, it's not that bad. since then ive become a nerd when it comes to this stuff even though i probably can't afford it. BHSK's home shop is iminusd, and i'm really digging these "champion" kits. iminusd is always coming with a clean approach to their imagery and this one's no different. what really pops out for me is the different left and right colors. it's like those socks that are left and right specific- totally uneccessary, but 100% cool.

buy one now.

handsplittin: broken with kris lockedcog

Broken. from Kris *lockedcog* on Vimeo.
so kris had this gruesome picture of his hand somewhere- he kinda broke it and split his thumb/index web open or something. it was brutal. so since he's out of commish, he dropped a little short one of the clips he got before he got broke off. that last one was really complicated- 180, wall stomp, 180, halfcab out. nice shit. literally.

the local locals: 5onit clothing website now up

(via 5onit)
you can't really go anywhere with FGFS in the bay area or in nor cal for that matter without hearing about 5onit or seeing a young dude sporting a 5onit shirt. you may have seen their stuff in pics, edits, or in real life when it comes to bay area/nor cal events. they now have their website up, so if you've been curious to what it's all about, here it is.

love and happiness: cowtown couriers

Cowtown Couriers from BBG Kansas City on Vimeo.
harish of BBGKCMO sent this one over to me through facebook- i love getting videos so send them over when you have them. cowtown couriers is kansas city's true bike courier biz and this little video shows how seamless everything is. the main dude rudy will get you anything in terms of deliveries- food, diapers, booze, condoms, whatever. if you need these services and you're in KC, hit them up.

i loves me a street track bike with a front rack i tell you whut....

city of preston: deaf pigeon's flying rat squad

Deaf Pigeon - Flying Rat Squad from Danny Cameron on Vimeo.
there's nothing like a chill, chilly aired, night ride with the homies. UK based crew, deaf pigeon, did just that in their little rainy city of preston. they're hoping to get a full length fast bike edit out and i hope they get going before the cold season creeps up. soon enough we're all going to be bundled up and riding will become a chore by then... scary thoughts.

meanwhile in the motherland: U.P. Los Baños ride

U.P. Los Baños Long Weekend Ride! from Leo Diño on Vimeo.
the philippines is near and dear to my heart because my family is from there- i haven't been back there for a really really long time, but i'd love to go back. the philippines is different when it comes to fixed gear. it's not as huge as in indonesia or malaysia, and the bikes in general aren't really the hardcore stuff we see from those other countries. but the riders are hungry and humble and will rider 75 miles on whatever they have. it's pretty cool.

bhsk is a food blog now: spoking fun's taco & pizza patches

(via spoking fun)
if you're a follower of my instagram, then you may be familiar with the hashtag #bhskisafoodblognow. truth is, i'm a big boy at heart and may be a big boy in real life- i loves me some food. two foods i'm very fond of are pizza and tacos. spoking fun mixed that in with my odd obsessions of bikes and patches. so this is pretty much tailor made for me. i suggest you buy one now because they always sell out of patches. ALWAYS.

taco wheel, get it? GET IT??

mallets up: the battle for california benchminor

(via lockedcog)
there's alot of good stuff happening in northern california when it comes to bike events coming up. kris posted up this one of a sac town bike polo tourney going down this weekend. i'm looking to getting some more polo stuff on here especially since we're going to have some polo coming to the pay at SF bike expo this year. should be a good one.
