as much as it's been getting saturated, track bike fixed gear crits are here to stay. there's been a huge saturation of frames lately and it's kind of overwhelming. for a while i thought it was kinda dumb- building road racing frames with fixed drivetrains makes the argument for regular ass road bikes. coming from an era where track bikes were tight and inherently "more" dangerous, these frames used to not appeal to me. i dont know what happened from then, but i'm turning a leaf and understanding you might need the right tool for the job. rhevo is from italy, and this frame is purpose built for crits like red hook. in fact it was the steed for the guy who came in 7th. it's pretty fuckin rad. check it out.

im going to be completely honest here; my face has been consumed with so much mountain bike stuff lately that i havent been paying attention to all these new track bike companies that have been popping up. there are some bikes that are utter shit, but there are a few that have come across my eyes and have really impressed me (and let's be real, it's really fucking hard to impress me). tyrant is one of those companies that have impressed me. now they dont have a website just yet but it popped on my radar when they showed a silhouette of it on their instagram. from the untrained eye one can probably assume that this geometry shares the same angles and as a previous PC collab. nah dude, this shit looks tighter. it's got double butted alu tubing, a wickedly underraked fork (fucking love that), and a seat tube cutout to make that wheelbase hella tight. buttery. you can get all the details at patrick's spot.  look for it as an exclusive through PC.

well this is a shit show: no forreals this time BHSK is back.

okay so i turned 28 last month which means the BHSK name has existed for 10 years (the first few years were pretty weird, but that shit existed). my dumb ass has been attached to BHSK for 10 fucking years. i still get called BHSK. this got me thinking about how BHSK just faded into fixed gear obscurity (which to be honest is not punk rock at all) and how much i have been intending to revive this "brand" of seriously not being serious about bikes. for whatever reason, you knuckleheads have been waiting for (oh fuck my bad) years for this to happen. so its going to happen.

now let's be clear, the scenery has changed since then. my life has changed since then: i finished school, i got a job, i got into rock climbing, i got a real job, i bought a mountain bike that i never use, my car died, i quit my real job, i got a really real job for real this time, i bought a road bike that is probably worth more than my car that died, and other stuff. all that time i've had BHSK and i'm only one dude. i have been doing this as a one dude operation since day one really, and that really slowed me down and wore me down for years. now i'm not saying i've totally grown up because my dumb ass has gone through professional changes and lifestyle changes yet this damn BHSK shit has been sitting on the back of my mind forever. so for this era, your boy's going to need some help.

you will be hearing soon from some homies of mine that have agreed to help me out and keep the content flow going. these homies have been with me for a minute, and have been in the game for a long time. they have had their own thing going on and i want to give them an outlet for their content and debauchery. they also come from the same mental state and approach to bikes i do, and i'm confident you guys will like these fuckers as they'll pretty much remind you of the good old solo jmik.

needless to say i'm excited as fuck.

so i was looking over the results of berlin's rad race on the interwebs (because the event really looked interesting) when a particular bike caught my eye. it was almost a gulf livery orange and blue, and had logos i had never seen before; i'm a curious fellow, and i know that there's not much in the track bike world that i haven't seen so naturally i had to look them up. these guys are supernova, they make frames out in italy. the two machines they have are the atom (up on top) and the pro 2.0 (bottom) which the latter seemed like the weapon of choice. first of all, GAT DAMN THESE THINGS ARE PRETTY. the atom would be their carbon setup and the supernova pro 2.0 is made of columbus tubing (because italian, duh) and both seem like wonderfully streetable frames. i really hope to see more from these folks, because these frames look fantastic. check them out.

here's a confession: when state bikes started, i didn't like them. this was the time where a million different "fixie" companies jumped into the ring trying to ride the wave, so me being the idiot i am, generalized a distaste towards all of them. state won me over, however. why? they started making cool shit like mountain bikes and cyclocross machines- they didn't limit themselves to a small corner of cycling and for that, i send serious props. part of the cool shit they do is collab with unlikely partners- this time it's The Simpsons. this collection is MASSIVE. we're talking about jerseys, shirts, bar tape, bottles, bikes, framesets, foot retention- you name it, they probably made it for this collection. seriously, check it out for yourself.

street fighter: cinelli tipo pista

over the time i've been gone, ive seen a ridiculous amount of aluminum frame track bikes over saturate the market. i may sound like our future president, but there's too much crap out there that looks like good stuff but is really not worth the metal it's made from. this is a rant (ooh i see your knees shaking on the idea of jmik going on a loooooong rant about stuff) that i'll get to later on. there are little sure shots out there and you can't go wrong with a cinelli. the tipo pista is a great alternative to the cheap crap out there. with the emergence of criterium track bike racing and folks taking track bikes to the street, the angles of the tipo pista caters to that whole movement with a less extreme and more foregiving track geometry. with a starting price of $1035, it's not the most affordable aluminum street fighter out there, but it's definitely fitting in that middle ground right before full blown track build (especially considering the cinelli x mash runs in the $900's or so). you can get yours out at citygrounds now.

this is a rad series that's been popping up on the interwebs lately. chrome is a staple in our community and they're highlighting both sides of the country. each spot has their own style and tastes, but the common denominator is the stuff we're riding and the stuff we're hauling. first we got the fam in san francisco- there's way too many people in that to mention. then on the other end of the spectrum we have a core crew in new york; both are big cities, both are wildly entertaining to ride, both have bridges (and both have the home matt reyes, because slum is a hard working motherfucker and defies time and space). the year is ending, and next year might be rough so maybe we should all look back and reflect on the people with us and surroundings that we live in.

oh and watch out for those autonomous uber cars, eh?

leader bikes rider brian wagner is nuts. while in mexico the guy decided to go on a little ride that maxed out around 50 mph on his renovatio. that's fucking fast as fuck with some mind boggling cadence going on some questionable road terrain as you could see from the video. kudos to him.

previously defunct a little after arrival, G.O.A.T bike co was set to be the setup everyone wanted. i'm destroy til death but this would look good in my stable; and with good reason. it's true temper steel, American built, triple triangle, high bottom bracket goodness with stiffness and street performance in mind. that's a breath of fresh air in the over saturated run-of-the-mill selection that's out there. a little birdie told me that these frames are dropping real soon so don't fucking sleep. keep tabs on their facebook.

chun li: ritte 8055 track

there used to be a time where you would have to buy a track monster for fixed gear street races, but they were mad aggressive since they were only designed to go straight and turn on banked curves. now some bike manufacturers are developing bikes specifically for events like the red hook fixed gear crit. take the ritte 8055 for example. if you dont know about ritte cycles, they're wild folks. this setup was designed with events like red hook in mind- ample pedal clearance, a more road-like geo, and 7005 butted alluminum with hand sanded tig welds. the result is a sexy ass street fighter that can take on any thing you give it. get the full spec here.

you may have seen photos of colossi floating around the interwebs before and you used to have to jump though hoops to get one. if you're not so familiar, colossi is a company that specializes in small batch and fully custom framesets based in shenzen, china with builder jan kole at the helm. recently, they acquired distribution in the US a la brooklyn, new york. that being said, a slew of new stuff has popped up including the low pro encore which looks like a hoot to ride. you can check them out on facebook and their website here!

the starting point of reasoning: the heavy pedal axiom

okay so i've been writing a bunch about to the folks over there at the heavy pedal, but that's because they're pumping stuff out like crazy. their next endeavor is the axiom which picks up where the zephyr left off. we all know how batshit crazy the zephyr was as it emulated a certain old school track frame that will not be named. but like that old school track frame, it ran a one inch headset. that's old school. here we have the axiom with a tight geo, higher bottom bracket, seat tube cut out, and (by golly) an 1 1/8th head tube. it's a little muted than it's brother in terms of color, but it's definitely going to be a heavy hitter when it comes to the fixed gear circuit. see more over here.

i got a blurb from victor from the heavy pedal letting me know about their newest joints: the tempo wheelset. constructed of carbon and utilizing lightweight gran compe hubs these things are silly light, and provide ample aerodynamics with it's u shaped body. yeah they cost a little much, but come on- they're carbon high performance wheels. check em out in detail over at the heavy pedal.
