i wanted to post about this one earlier but i never got around to it. i know, i'm going on a rough tangent right now with the ritte story and now this- this is interesting to me and it hits home (sort of). here you see an infographic of stolenbikes reported on the san francisco bay area craigslist. it tells me that one idiot forgot his or her lock in the area where i used to live, and that if you're in the mission in SF, you better bring a lock. or two. or five. you can find out about how the information was gathered over here.

if you're a bicycle nerd like i am, then ritte van vlaanderen should be a name you might be familiar with. like many great bike endeavors, it started as sort of a laugh but then became something huge (well at least to me anyway). wired talked to spencer canon, the founder of ritte, about the origins, current events, and future of the brand. the story and mission of ritte is extremely interesting, and it's a smashing good read. you should take a look.

along with their sprint, another superb setup that i'm excited for is the super vivace. the super vivace takes lugged columbus zona tubing into the from of a tight track geometry, resulting in one of the most beautiful frame/fork setups i've ever seen. and it's under a grand. and there's a good selection of different colors- how cool would it be if a bunch of these together and ran a keirin race? the pre-order details as well as the specs are over here.

damn the homie jakob is a monster. some of the livery design gruppe made their way to woodward, and this one chronicles jakob, jason clary and jesse santos. earlier today, jakob put out a screen shot of the roof gap, underplaying everything that was about to go down in the edit. damn, 180s are huge, for some reason i really liked that double peg up to feeble down, and the roof gap was a really nice cherry on top. really hyped to see jesse attempting that flip too! massive stuff!

this was no surprise to me- in fact it was a surprise to me that this only happened now. i'm a fan of nitto and their bars, but their riser offering was often shrouded by horror stories of snapping. it was no secret that the B259AA had that flaw, and now they're recalling it. if you have a set, make sure you go and and get them checked out.

our friends at fyxation are pushing out alot of the handlebars they previewed a while back. first off. there's going to be a comprehensive review of their freestyle bars coming soon from me (all good). secondly, there's 2 different styles of the rodeo bars- pursuit with a drop, and standard bullhorn. both are constructed of 6061-t6 aluminum which is both stiff and light, and both utilize a pretty standard 25.4 clamp diameter. i'm a part of the group that prefers bullhorns over drops so i'm really psyched to see fyxation push an affordable option.

the kagero team is a really really elite group of dudes riding a really revered frameset. their reach is from jakarta, indonesia, and up and down the west coast. the newest member of the kagero team is josh hayes- again, you should know him from the last part in macaframa. i guess he and matt went out to the beach to get some impressive portraits. we've been seeing alot of josh lately and it's really cool to see him around the blog-o-sphere.

andrew romashyna hails from the country up north and is also a courier that reps YNOT- you may remember seeing this one a while back. this one is for toronto's bikes on wheels shop and the place isnt called bikes on stands for a reason. first off, the redbull minidrome looks ridiculous fun. secondly, this thing was put together really nicely and is proof that you dont necessarily need narration all the time.

slept on this one or lost the link- it just didnt get up in a timely manner. i really have to give it up to matt rice at deal with it because it's really easy to forget that the bay area is not just san jose. this is my friend nick and this was shot in oakland. he's a believer in 700c/29", and one of the dudes that has the philosophy of being well rounded in terms of utilizing the fixed gear drivetrain the it's fullest potential.

he's also hella ballsy when it comes to doing some hardcore things like wheeliing down some stairs. keep track of my east bay friends at matt rice's joint!

i saw this on chirosangaku andthough it's not necessarily related to fixed gear stuff, i found it really interesting. there's been a really big influx of "action" cameras hitting the market as of late, and when it comes time to choose one, people seem a little lost. the guys at the germany based MTB-news took 6 different cameras out and had a slugfest with them: the gopro hero 2, the Contour "+" and "roam", the drift, the POV camera, and the camone infinity. i dont think i've seen a more comprehensive review of cameras of this nature, and its definitely 1) really useful if you're in the market for a camera, 2) surprising. if you have a browser that translates german (i.e. google chrome), you should definitely look through this.

you probably have no idea who cicli maestro or travelteq is. i had no idea who they were. travelteq makes bags and well... travel stuff. cicli maestro is an italian bicycle maker that functions alot like republic bikes but with older styled frames. put them together and you have a $1,108 bicycle. yeah. that is bloody expensive and you would think they'd put some better cranks on there yo. check out the specs over at travelteq.

i'm really digging this bag, and though i'm more of a big messenger bag kind of guy, i am a sucker for radical details. rather than taking a stock bag and slapping a kagero logo on it, patrick designed this one from scratch with the help of blaq design. it's really simple with 2 side pockets, a main compartment, and a zippered back pocket; but it also has a bunch of D rings, a top handle, some strategically placed elastic to take care of some of the load, and 1000d cordura making this bag extremely functional.

oh yeah. and it has a pentagram on it.

a little advice, sit down when you watch this because you will definitely watch parts of this over and over. jonathan davis is a radical dude and his style is super fast and and huge making him one of the more entertaining riders to watch. his one footed airs are super tweaked, his feebles are lightning quick, roof drops are absolutely crazy and he 180's over a rail like a boss. there's so many things that could go wrong with those last 2 hitters, but JD handles it arm brace and all. hell yeah buddy!

in the world of cars, there is a group of few called "wheel whores". i'm a "bar whore" because i have this strange obsession over handlebar shapes and functionality. the phoenix bars have been in development for quite some time they kicked the rise up off the prototype from 100mm to 110mm. in 'mercuh that a third of an inch or so resulting in a 4.3 inch rise. the production model will use a 4 degree upsweep and 10 degree backsweep giving these bars a defined shape. personally when a a bar is lurking around 4 inches, i think it needs a cross bar to reinforce it. regardless of my opinion, looks like phoenix is pushing some product out.

we got mad love for solid bmx because they keep it local- they're pretty much a one hour drive from where BHSK HQ is located at. this one not only has Wolfman from stranger bikes, it's got Kevin Malia, Stephen Perjanik, Nick Hammer, Tanner Easterla, Tristan Adams, and Jase Knack ripping salt lake city, utah which has quickly become a focus here i guess because of our homies at FOAD. is it just me or does SLC have hella spots? yeah... it's around 11 and a half minutes long, so it will take some of your time but if you're down with some bmx you'll be with this one.

matt reyes has been hanging out with the grime guys alot lately since they've infiltrated the bay area. apparently these are some proto bars, but something tells me that these didn't have a cross bar before... matt brings up a good point- bars are getting really tall and i'm thinking at a 4 inch rise bars need a reinforcing crossbar... these things look like they're pushing above 5 inches, but then again this is all speculation and through what i know about structural integrity or whatever. sound off on what you think about the ever rising handlebar over at wheeltalk- i'm curious to hear some discussion...

everything in this is so right. first off, it's aj austin- dude is not only a character but one of those remaning on 700c with a RIGHT hand drive where he grinds on his RIGHT side (RAAAAADIIICALLLL). you also have john prolly going "woo" in the background which makes you kinda wanna go "woo" too. that bike switch was one of those things that on paper seems stupid, but in real life looks stupid-cool, that hop 30 seconds in was impressive, and nose mannys for days. very nice.

francesco moser is basically a living legend on cycling. if the last name sounds familiar, then you probably know him from having one of the nuttiest bicycles ever conceived for breaking records- he broke eddy merckx's hour record in 1984. but this then resulted in a revamping of the rules, and blah blah blah. still, the guy had many acheivements in cycling and is one of the greatest still living. eroica cicli got to hang out with francesco and got an inside look into his "garage". it's so beautiful, you might cry. check out the rest of the set (and you need to check out the rest) over here.

i remember seeing this but something happened to my computer and i totally lost it. then, like some inception kind of thing- i dreamt i was riding one for some reason and the masterworks name came to me. i know, i might be crazy. anyway, i believe i saw these guys at the BBI "shiny side up" show and i really really like what they're doing. what i love about what these guys are doing is 1) it's san jose. 2) they're making something totally different and really original. 3) no CNC, no CAM, just good old craftsmanship. there needs to be more people like this in the world. visit them at woodbicycle.com, and support local and good old craftsmanship always.

so my dad told me about this one and i thought it was really really interesting since it's pretty close to home. robert choi is a former specialized employee who basically innovated the industry with the utilization of LED lights for night riding. he worked for them and eventually went on to create volagi bikes base in the north bay. anyway, he and his business partner barley forsman got sued by specialized for breaching their contracts while under employment. choi was found guilty and was ordered to pay specialized $1. no you read that right, one united states dollar. on volagi's twitter, i believe that they're gathering 100 pennies with 100 cyclists riding down to morgan hill to pay the debt. that sounds like a gangsta move by choi. what a badass.

if you didnt know, a good part of so cal is over in austin, texas ripping it up. today it took a pretty nasty turn for corey while riding in san marcos; here's the details from john:

"Today, while we were riding in San Marcos, Corey hit this rail gap to firecracker. He wasn't happy with the first run, so he hit it again, but this time he clipped it, sending him over the bars and 8' down to the sidewalk. We thought the biggest problem was his split chin, which we fixed but we were wrong.
I'm heading out the door to the ER, where Corey has internal bleeding of the liver. Please, I don't care how religious you are, pray for him. I feel horrible right now but we need to back him and there's no harm in some positive energy."

that's serious right there. we hope corey's condition gets better, as well as a speedy recovery.

amongst the shift in older companies moving their production overseas, there's an apparent shift of smaller companies moving towards the opposite direction. one of the companies that i'm really psyched to see some american product made is blkmrkt bikes. they shouldnt be a new name to you because even though they're rooted in dirt jump MTB, they also have a foot in FGFS as well. here's what they had to say about the difficulties of american frame building:

"Since the day we stopped producing Mobs with S&M getting an American Made frame had become my quest. I had no idea the issues I would face in having frames made here versus Taiwan other than price and material availability. Everything from builders wanting $400.00+ to weld a frame, to incorrect angles and mis-aligned frames or just not returning phone calls for months. What's the deal with manufacturing here? Why is it so difficult to do here, what gets done overseas in days... and done correctly the first time? The U.S.A. was good at this shit at one point... Henry Ford wrote the book on manufacturing didn't he? That's what I miss about S&M... Chris and Jason have built a manufacturing shop in the states that can build quality straight and true frames the first time. Props to them for that..."

first off, the name of this shoe just tipped off in my brain recalling this particular song. so when you read this, play the song or something. cog magazine teamed up the people at chrome to make a really limited southside sneaker that features an embossed cog logo and a cool looking cog edition insole. oh and it's limited to 600 pairs woldwide. you can get a little more insight to what the cog mag is all about in this interview conducted by none other than the prollster.

yup it's that time again for another installment of KVLT KLIPS by wolfdrawn. usual suspects of antonyo, matt, congo, corey and joe... oh and lil b the based god (of course). what i really love about the kvlt klips series is that it shows the crew either riding new stuff, or maximizing the potential of spots we've seen before. by the way, I KNOW WHERE :47 IS! it's the sketchiest place at night. corey's tuck no to wheelie baffles me, congo's doublepeg to wheelie and almost 180 was impressive, matt's got some crazy wheelie and bike control going on, antonyo's got some really good flat work in this, and joe is joe- his stuff is always good.

it's a bummer that i cant go embed the photo essay code from the guardian because you get to hear tommy speak about this whole thing. in any case, tommy godwin was an olympic medalist circa the 1948 london summer olympics, winning 2 bronze medals at hearne hill in team pursuit and the 1km TT. he was 28 then, and today he's 91. yes, 91. pretty dapper lad for his age. here he is running the same bicycle he won those medals on, a BSA (a company which was sold to raleigh in the next decade) with a brooks saddle. take some time to go and listen to the narrated photo essay over here. it's really really cool.

i've been waiting for this one to drop, and it looks like my patience is yielding results. the eighthinch bueller, after a good amount of time being in development, is finally up and in stock. these ones are going to be 32mm wide (to put in perspective, chukkers are 24mm wide), are drilled with 36 eyeleted holes. they'll be available in 700c and 26" for a solid (wayyyyy inexpenive for a rim) $39.50

if you get the wheelset you get the bueller rim laced to a 10mm female axled front, and back- they also include the 14mm axle conversion kit. again these are both available in 700c or 26". these things are only the tip of the iceberg of what's to come from eighthinch, and it's a solid thing to start with!

i'm still have a little bit of fume of hate from that one off thing involving rebel8 and shadow- this kinda ignited that "bummer" flame. i found out that in addition to the rebel8 collabo, there were 3 other bikes- animal kept it ny with new york based 10 deep, SE went the "old school is coming back (but kinda corpo, yo)" vibe with starter, and cult kept it real with vans. okay, these are all awesome (not too sure about the SE thing, but i can manage)- the "what the fuck are you looking at" on the dt of the cult bike is funny as hell, i've always wondered how that print would look like on a bike with the animal setup, and shadow is my shit.

knowing that one of this collabo stuff will be out to be purchased makes me....

i think some people forget that all-city is more than FGFS. the other stuff that they do is equally as rad as their FGFS stuff- take this for example. the guys teamed up (again, you may recall the previous ones) with twin six, a bike-centric clothing company that produces casual and technical stuff that isn't overbearingly bike-y when youre riding. this is the result- it's simple, it's not frilly, and it's very much like the shirts in breaking away.

bianchi has made some awkward choices in terms of their track offerings before (white and blue super pista, pista dalmine & sei giorno...) but there's probably one thing that's come out of the recent hellish years that we can all agree upon: the pista classica. in the 2012 reincarnation of the lugged frame, they did something pretty bold bye painting the lugs cream. i know people out there might not like it, but i'm for it man... at least they pinstriped the head tube. not like any of us could afford one at $1300 a piece and at that price, you could probably get a better one built...

felipe aka "pepe" (pronouced "pay-pay") is a really good homie of mine that kinda lost interest in fixed freestyle after summer and started riding bmx. his last fixed edit under gnarcotix was really impressive since he's got this really exaggerated style that looks simple but shouldnt be duplicated because it's crazy. his barspins are really followed through,and if you've seen him nose pivot, he really throws that back end up. he recently got back on a fixed setup, and here he is with some of his bmx buds. he's dumb talented and i'm psyched to see him on a fixed drivetrain again.

muhamad aldjaidi AKA mr. mamad is responsible for rocket company, the shop responsible for jakarta's fixed fest which was responsible for bringing jakarta and the surrounding areas out on the map. faz adhili did this one for 24/7bigtime- a website dedicated to the south east asian fixed gear movement. it's a really interesting insight to one of the dudes generating steam for that area's fixed gear culture.

the guys at wheeltalk are doing a giveaway that involves one of the more sought after fgfs machines on the market to date. that's right, the specialized pfix. the rules are simple: head over to the post wheeltalk did about the giveaway before the january 31 and leave a comment. but make sure it's a good one because there's over 200 entries thus far- some of them.... not so convincing. pretty sure "because i ride 700c and i want to ride 26in" or "because my parents bought me a stupid leader" or "because i ride a conversion" are not good enough or very convincing either.... so my advice: go out there and make it count.

i'm actually very temped to go out and respond to some of these. "because i'm fat"? come on....

i was listening to this song earlier today and had the craziest deja vu hearing it again. the zlog crew of zach, chris clappe, j. ruff and tyler have had what seems to be a really active year and this one chronicles all of that. you cant deny that one of the biggest surprises of the year was johnson's move to 26", and this one has him on both! random clips of weird peole, solid riding, and one of the best examples of bike control at the end round up a really good one from the guys that hold down seattle.

as you know gus' little series of edits goes under the ½ ass moniker and this time he hits up murrieta and temecula with unknown's JD AKA jonathan davis. damn we need to see more jonathan davis because that guy is gnar as fuck. some bails, some tomfoolery but some impressive riding from gus and JD- talking about a grizz air from jon (i fucking love seeing those done on FGFS setups), and gus hitting flat 3s.

props to gus with that song choice too. i dig it.
